Google Ads for local businesses

Search is the only channel where the customer states their intent, in their own words, before you spend anything. Most local accounts waste that.

A local business has a structural advantage on search that national advertisers cannot buy: geography narrows the auction. The competition for a query inside one city is a fraction of the competition for the same query nationally.

The advantage gets squandered in a predictable way — by letting the account buy far more than it should.

Control what the account is allowed to buy

Broad match with a thin negative list will find you queries you would never have chosen. The fix is unglamorous and continuous: review search terms on a schedule, add negatives every time, and choose match types to constrain rather than expand.

For most local accounts this single habit does more than any bidding change.

Tell Google which leads were real

Where the sale closes on the phone or in person, the platform has no idea which clicks produced revenue. It optimises toward form fills because that is all it can see.

Offline conversion import closes that loop: stamp the enquiry with the click identifier, import closed deals weekly, and the account starts steering toward the queries that produce customers.

Send the click somewhere that answers it

A search for a service in a city should not land on a homepage. Address, hours, service area and a way to call should be visible without scrolling.

This is the cheapest performance improvement available to most local accounts, and it costs nothing in media.
